CIRTL at Virginia Tech Associate Teaching Program
Get Involved!
Based on CIRTL’s Learning Goals, the Associate Teaching Program is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral associates to connect and associate with effective teaching practices.
The Goal
The goal is for participants to describe and recognize the value of effective teaching and understand how applying evidence-based teaching practices can benefit a variety of career paths – whether in the classroom, in the research lab, in the community, or in other professional contexts.
Digital Badge
Upon program completion, participants will receive a digital CIRTL at Virginia Tech Associate Badge recognizing their achievement of program requirements. A digital badge provides a way to visually communicate accomplishments with a variety of audiences through online platforms (e.g., digital resumes, e-portfolios, LinkedIn).
Eligibility
To be eligible for the CIRTL at Virginia Tech Associate Teaching Program, you must be a current graduate student or postdoctoral associate at Virginia Tech, and you must complete the program requirements during your time as a graduate student or postdoctoral associate at the university. Note that badges will not be awarded to those who are not current graduate students or postdoctoral associates at Virginia Tech. The program is open to graduate students and postdoctoral associates regardless of teaching experience or responsibilities.
Four Options
CIRTL at Virginia Tech offers four options for completing the Associate Teaching Program. All options involve programming focused on foundational knowledge about teaching and the completion of a teaching philosophy activity that allows participants to start building their teaching portfolios. The teaching philosophy activity involves 1) writing your teaching philosophy statement, 2) self-assessing the statement, and 3) responding to reflection prompts.
If selecting this option, you will be required to complete five workshops offered by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) at Virginia Tech and/or the CIRTL Network. Only approved workshops listed here each semester will be counted for Option 1 completion. Please note that only fall 2025 workshops are listed below. Additional workshops will be offered in future semesters, and workshops may be completed in multiple semesters during your time as a graduate student or postdoctoral associate at Virginia Tech, but no repeated workshops will be counted. The workshops may vary in length and modality, and participants are encouraged to select workshops that work best for them. Note that a multi-part workshop counts as one workshop only, and you must fully participate in all parts of a multi-part workshop for it to count as one completed workshop. The five-workshop option is not credit-bearing. However, registration for workshops is required, and some workshops have limited capacity.
